Recession or Re-adjustment?Posted in: Blog, How the virus of social sites does not infect all...
Personally I think it is the latter…
There are many intelligent people who I regularly converse with in my life. One of these people and probably the one I enjoy listening to the most is my mum, Cynthea Wellings. I have one of those mums that everyone dreams of: easy going, web savvy, motivating and, most importantly, an independent thinker. We regularly discuss the ‘ins and outs’ of pressing world issues, global trends and of course… dinner!
The reason for this post is to explain something that she described to me over the weekend. The idea that the current recession is, in her eyes, more of a re-adjustment or re-allocation of new & old resources. The world has spent the last few years evolving. It is now a place where the little blue ethernet cable running to everyones home and office has become the electricty grid. We have learnt to communicate on significantly greater levels, in many new ways and are doing so in a faster way than ever before. Within kilobytes per second I can speak or write about something, film something or take a picture and upload it on to the net. This has all happened over the last few years, the world has gone viral and… so have the animals living in it *(swine, bird, equine, mad cow) joke*. We have grown as a planet in such a way that massive channels of communication, market access and product/service deliverability has been easy to come by and infultrate. Many people have eagerly embraced these channels, but now we are heading into a world where they start to come together. When Guttenburg printed his first book, a new world of thinkers, readers and writers grew. Suddenly more and more people where being given access to this new media and the printed word grew virally as a form of communication. Similarly, the radio turned this written media in to an archaic communication tool. For timely information such as news, even today my nan would still prefer to listen to the radio throughout the day rather than watch the t.v. at night. The world is shifting, it has spread it’s wings over the past few years and now it is pulling them back in. Things are starting to come back together, we are reassessing and consolidating the changes. This is where those who have shined get brighter and those who have tagged along drop off.
The saying ‘history repeats itself’ is one that comes to mind today. Where are we heading? Will the new channels being created start solidifying? Will Facebook become ‘the’ site for socialising, similar to youtube having become ‘the’ site for video. These questions are important but not crucial, at the end of the day it will be those people and companies who adjust that live on, not those who don’t. The only question left to ask is…
…are you receding or are you adjusting?
