A Political Perspective.Posted in: Blog, Newshit, Political Commentary

Political parties are a business. They are a group of like minded people working collectively towards achieving the one goal. This goal being the aim of selling their only product, their leader. Technically, the Australian political system is designed to discourage such a thing.

However, in the past few years, Kevin Rudd has been able to acheive what all businesses dream of. He has taken a monopolistic share of the market. His ability to sell himself as a political brand or product if you will has added significant value to himself and his party.

The product itself is nothing special, there has been as many upsides as there have been down, in regards to the policy decisions made in the past year. None more concerning than the environmental backflips Peter Garrett has made. The fact that our government is allowing Gunns to build their pulp mill is disgraceful, let alone the ongoing logging which has been occuring in the past 20 years.

If, and I say that reluctantly, Kevin Rudd looses the next election he will not have left the labor party high and dry like the former P.M. did with the Liberal party. No, in fact, he will probably leave them with some of the most significant and diverse communication channels any business has had access to in the history of our planet.

Let me throw some figures at you (as at 03/08/09):

  • Kevin Rudd’s Twitter Followers: 300,425
  • 28,048 supporters on Facebook

  • 100,000’s of video views on Youtube

  • Most Importantly, a comprehensive email marketing database spread across multiple websites, personal sites and government based information sites.

Now think about the number of Twitter followers he has again, I want you to imagine what 300,000 people looks like. It’s 3 full MCG’s on Grand Final day! Almost four electorates and believe it or not, it’s a bigger amount of people than some states have in terms of population.

Now imagine if those 300,000 people represented 10,000 swinging voters from 30 electorates. Or, if your not a gambler and don’t like those odds, how about 30,000 swinging voters from 10 electorates?

It sounds like a landslide election is looming??? Wouldn’t you say?

It also sounds like Malcom Turnbull and the Liberal party need an online marketing strategist. A recent comment on radio by the British Opposition Leader, David Cameron, was that ‘twitter was for twats’. *Laughs in face of minister*.

I have tried to remain politically correct until now, but my moral sense must prevail.  I do not extend an offer of assitance to the Liberal party. However, if you are reading this and happen to be from the Greens party or any other party concerned with the environment, please contact me!

Kevin Rudd has developed an online community, database and brand which is starting to rival even Barack Obama’s media campaign. Victorian Premier, John Brumby is doing an impressive job also so full credit to him and his team. Just check out this campaign!
