The Questions:

Ennovate Melbourne 2009
- What is your ideal view of the world in 50 years time?
- What changes will need to be made to achieve this ideal world?
- How will these changes impact the world as it currently stands?

I see communication as one of the things that is going to change the most in the next 50 years. However, I believe this aspect of human life involves more than simply talking, smiling or writing to another person. Communication involves people moving from place to place, it involves people working with one and other and most importantly it has become the new way to meet, learn and feel included in life.

The internet is by far the most significant advancement since the point that we first rose on two feet and were classifed as Homo Erectus. I say that with seriousness, some of you traditional thinkers may suggest things like Nobel’s gunpowder or Da Vinci’s anatomyical observations are far greater advances, but I would disagree.

The internet has created a global community, market place and a communication platform like nothing has in the past. It allows for accurate and realistic information to be shared in real time and has probably played a foundational role in reducing global poverty and creating awareness of what’s beyond the borders of ones own country.

I believe it will play a fundamental role in organising, colloborating and generating the conversations we will hear, read and watch arise in the coming 50 years. In answer to the question: ‘what changes will need to be made to make this happen?’ The answer is time.

The days that trees are cut down, 2 litres of water is used and tonnes of oil is burned to ship one piece of paper from Asia to your country are over. 50 years from now, paper won’t exist in the way it does today, your news won’t be delivered in print and the only cable you will need, in order to organise, run and manage every aspect of your life, business and career will be an connected to the web.

Remember, the huge quantites of content you will be consuming in 50 years time will still remain the same as it is today. The difference will be how it is organised and delivered to you. This is where the web will take the world (both humans and animals, granted, in some cases they may not be distinguishable) in the next 50 years.

I look forward to hearing the discussion at the upcoming ‘Ennovate Conference’ this Friday, however my cynical side hesitates in commenting on the ‘all talk and no action approach’ these events tend to take. Every one wants to save the world, but it’s getting progressively worse while they ‘do it’.

The saying ‘history repeats itself’ is one that comes to mind today. Where are we heading? Will the new channels being created start solidifying? Will Facebook become ‘the’ site for socialising, similar to youtube having become ‘the’ site for video. These questions are important but not crucial, at the end of the day it will[more]
