Adding valuePosted in: Blog, Marketing Talk

Street art online

Many of my fellow Melbournians will most likely be familiar with some of the fantastic street art which is done along the south bank promenade. Recently, I have noticed a new addition to the usual donation bowls bordering the amazing artworks.

Street Art in Melbourne

The ingenious prompt to visit their website! Suddenly, these unique performers and artists are able to create an online presence and point of contact for themselves. Well done to these interesting street artists in Melbourne!

A recent piece of art being drawn in this area was the ‘Avoid fare evasion Karma‘ symbol of Metlink, intelligently located at the footbridge leading over the Yarra to Flinders St station! Is there a logo or picture your company could have drawn along these pavements? If I was a street artist with these skills I’d love to be commissioned for work like this. Furthermore, many brands are really trying to sell to the underground subculture market these days and I’m sure this consumer cohort would respond well to this kind of a medium.

Interesting development, Will.

The only thing to be aware of is that there are most likely busking licenses needed to do this kind of thing on Melbourne’s streets.

Furthermore, if no licence was required - would it be classified as graffiti if these “artists” began drawing artworks for advertising purposes?

Hey Adam,

Thanks for the comment, I know what you mean in relation to busking and advertising in a public space. One good way around this is to only do the street art in front of your building etc. For example, drawing on the face of the steps at Flinders st under the clocks, or the footpath out the front of your specific store or shopping center.

It would be great if a company was able to commission these artist to integrate advertising with their on street art work. It would probably help them earn a more substantial living also.

Cheers,
Will
